Sinosteel Midwest Group will ‘Adopt a School’ today, visiting Mt Magnet District High School to talk about careers in mining as part of a federal Government initiative to ready young people for employment.
The Adopt a School Program encourages businesses to work with schools to give young people hands‐on learning experiences and raise awareness of the opportunities that await them.
Representatives from Sinosteel Midwest will meet with around 20 Year 9 to 12 students from Mt Magnet today to talk about their jobs, the training and qualifications required and their career journey so far.
According to Sinosteel Midwest’s Manager Organisation and Development Rick Brooks, who is taking part in the session, this is an important part of ensuring a sustainable industry. “The Mid West region is on the cusp of having a substantial mining industry so it is important students learn about the wide range of employment opportunities in the resources industry,” Mr Brooks said.
“For example, our Weld Range project is just 140km out from Mt Magnet and is expected to produce 15 million tonnes per annum as a cornerstone project to export out of the proposed Oakajee Port and Rail.
“With production set to commence in late 2013, pending government approvals and Oakajee Port and Rail timing, this project will come online just as some of these students enter the workforce ‐ so hopefully some of them will consider pursuing education and training to allow them to work on this project, or others like it,” he explained.
Program Coordinator Carolyn Pegler said that the Adopt a School Program has been hugely successful in the Mid West region over the past three years.
“I am very thankful to Sinosteel Midwest Group for being so willing to come on board with the Adopt a School Program.
“Hopefully the event will inspire the students to consider a future in the mining industry, which may allow them to stay in the region, and in some cases, close to their families,” Ms Pegler said.
The Adopt a School Program is a component of Local Community Partnerships, an Australian Government‐funded career development and transition support program called Career Advice Australia. It is designed to assist 13 to 19 year olds gain the skills, experience and professional guidance they need to make a successful transition through school and onto further education, training and employment.
