"Specifically, we're looking to support initiatives which strengthen the community, build the capacity of youth through education, conserve the natural environment or contribute to Indigenous interests." One of the recipients of this round of the Resourcing the Region program is the Rovers Football Club. According to Rovers President Tim Hayter, the Club would struggle to survive without the support Sinosteel Midwest has given them over the past three years.

"We place a strong focus on promoting cultural diversity through football, and support our players by mentoring them and assisting them with employment opportunities wherever possible," Mr Hayter said.

"We plan to use the funds from Sinosteel Midwest to maintain our facilities and improve the welfare of our players through the 'Play Safe to Stay Safe Program'."

The 'Play Safe to Stay Safe Program' aims to educate players on drug and alcohol abuse.

The Resourcing the Region Sponsorship Program is supplemented by a number of community development funds which Sinosteel Midwest has set up for local shires amounting to over $1 million.

Sinosteel Midwest operations are based in the shires of Geraldton Greenough, Morawa, Perenjori, Cue, Meekathara and the Murchison. Other nearby communities include the Shires of Irwin Mingenew and Mt Magnet.

The next round of applications for the Resourcing the Region Sponsorship Program will close on the 30th of June, 2011. Details on how to apply can be found at or by contacting the Sinosteel Midwest office on 08 9920 9700.
