Community Consultation for Weld Range Project

8 September 2010

Mid West iron ore developer Sinosteel Midwest Corporation has released the Public Environmental Review (PER) document for its Weld Range Iron Ore Project for a six week public consultation period to 18th October 2010.

As part of the consultation process, Sinosteel Midwest is inviting residents and business owners from the surrounding areas to visit a Community Open Day in Cue on Saturday 18th September 2010.

Located 50km northwest of Cue, the Weld Range project is expected to produce 15 million tonnes of iron ore each year over 15 years and will be a cornerstone project to export out of the proposed Oakajee Port.

Sinosteel Midwest's Chief Operating Officer Giulio Casello said that the PER consultation period provides the opportunity for members of the public to find out about the project and to make comment or ask questions.

"During the consultation process, and throughout the life of the project, we are committed to ensuring the community is kept fully informed of plans for Weld Range," Mr Casello said.

"The PER document is an integral part of the approvals process and ensures that we assess any environmental impacts the project may have and plan to manage them in a responsible manner.

Weld Range is Sinosteel Midwest's flagship project and has the potential to provide a significant boost to the State and regional economy.

"The project will result in job opportunities and flexible employment options for local Cue, Meekatharra and Mt Magnet residents. During construction, the project will have a peak workforce in excess of 1000 people, with over 500 permanent employees during operations. In addition, it will have flow‐on benefits through outsourcing of services and supplies, with our preference always being to 'buy local' wherever feasible," Mr Casello said.

"The Shires surrounding Weld Range, including Cue, Mt Magnet and Meekatharra all have a stake in the Weld Range project and so it's important we communicate with these communities in an open and transparent way," Mr Casello said.

The Community Open Day on Saturday 18th September will be located near the entrance of the 2 Murchison Traders on Great Northern Highway and run from 9.00am to 2:00pm. Key people from Sinosteel Midwest will be on hand to provide information on the Weld Range project and answer questions. A free sausage sizzle will also be provided to guests from 9:00am.

In addition a display and hard copy of the PER document will be placed in the foyer of the Cue, Mt Magnet and Meekatharra Shire Offices during the six week consultation period.

The PER document is available to download from the Sinosteel Midwest website at Alternatively a free copy on CD can be ordered by contacting Sinosteel Midwest on 08 9920 9700.
