According to Sinosteel Midwest’s Community and Indigenous Relations Manager Rowena Roberts the sponsorship program provides a framework to guide the company’s investment into the community.
“Sinosteel Midwest has been active in the community for over five years, and has already invested more than $30 million in the Mid West region,” Ms Roberts said.
“In 2009, our community support programmes directly benefited local organisations to the tune of over $200,000.
“Our new Resourcing the Region sponsorship program has been introduced to make it easier for members of the community to access the available funds, and ensure money is directed into our key areas of focus.
“Specifically, we’re looking to support initiatives which strengthen the community, build the capacity of youth through education, conserve the natural environment or contribute to Indigenous interests,” Ms Roberts said.
The company has piloted the Resourcing the Region Sponsorship Program over the past quarter, and grants to date include: a $30,000 donation to the Midwest Life Education Program; $5,000 to an Indigenous mentoring program through the Murchison Education Strategy in partnership with Crosslands and OPR; $15,000 to support the Rovers Football Club; and $1,500 to Foodbank Geraldton.
The Resourcing the Region Sponsorship Program is supplemented by a number of community development funds which Sinosteel Midwest has set up for local shires amounting to over $1 million.
“Our aim is to ensure current and future generations benefit from our involvement in the community through an integration of environmental protection, social advancement and economic prosperity,” Sinosteel Midwest Chief Operating Officer Giulio Casello said. Sinosteel Midwest operations are based in the shires of Geraldton Greenough, Morawa, Perenjori, Cue, Meekathara and the Murchison. Other nearby communities include the Shires of Irwin Mingenew and Mt Magnet.
